O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. She was able to make it into the top hundred round when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the third place. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the final two in the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol straight away.
